The right light for the kitchen island: 7 successful examples

If you like to cook, you need functional lighting that is nevertheless atmospheric. These solutions bring both
Finding the right lighting for kitchen island is not so easy: it has to be light enough to work on, but it must not disturb the atmosphere, especially in open living areas. In addition, there is still the hood in the way ... There are several ways to provide the core zone of the kitchen with the right light. We liked these 7 examples very much.

1. More light through more lights

Pendant lights are decorative and still provide pleasant light. The countertop also depends on good illumination. The solution: a row of several lights. But there is a lot to consider.
On the one hand, the classic cooker hood on the ceiling can not be combined with pendant lights. A prerequisite for this variant (and some of the following) is therefore a fume hood solution, in which the cooking fumes are sucked right down to the hob down, so a downdraft trigger or a Muldenlüftung.
On the other hand, pendant luminaires can only be used where the ceiling reaches a certain height, so that they do not hang too close over the cooking island - otherwise they would obstruct the view and interfere with cooking. A minimum distance of 65 centimeters between the luminaire and the worktop is usually sufficient.

2. Extractor hood with integrated lighting

Some modern extractor hoods bring the lighting with you. This island hood acts like a floating UFO and casually donates enough workable light. In the working area of the kitchen, an illuminance of approximately 500 lux is recommended. To ensure this light intensity, an additional ceiling lighting is often used in addition to an extractor hood with integrated light.

3. With swivel arm lights

Ceiling lights, which can be directed by swivel arm directly to the place of action, provide the right work light for every situation. Similar to pendant lights, they are only suitable for cooking islands, whose extractor hood is integrated into the worktop. Again, you should combine several lights together so that the light intensity is sufficient.

4. With table lamps

Discreet it is hardly. Although the open kitchen area in this new building is also supplied with light by the wall lighting - the work light on the kitchen island, however, donates two table lamps. Because what is useful for desk work also fulfills its purpose in the kitchen.

5. Light and air in one

This metal construction also combines two functions: cooker hood and light. Because the kitchen island is covered over its entire length, the integrated spotlights provide sufficient light for the worktop and counter.

6. Adjustable ceiling

spotlights Rail systems on the ceiling offer a special advantage: the spotlights can usually be pivoted and turned separately, so that the light can be used selectively. This creates an individual lighting system that can be aligned with the most important areas of life and work. For even illumination, the distance between the radiators should be about 50 to 80 centimeters. Also pay attention to spotlights that provide sufficient light intensity. The decisive factor is the light intensity that you need to work. With a dimmer you remain flexible, if you only need mood lighting - and many LED bulbs are now dimmable.

7. Suspended ceiling with simple spots

Simple and modern, the architect Lutz Gnosa has implemented the subject of lighting in this Hamburg kitchen. A kind of suspended ceiling in the same dimensions as the kitchen island brings the integrated cooker hood and several recessed lights to the correct height. The solution is multifunctional, uniform and supplies the kitchen island with a sufficient amount of light.
Which lighting variant do you like best? Or have you found another solution for your kitchen island?
