MADE-TO-MEASURE BATHROOM MIRRORS: WHAT TYPES ARE THERE?

5:16 AM

A bathroom without a mirror? Unthinkable! But the must-haves in the bathroom are available in many different sizes and shapes to choose from. We give an overview.

A WORLD WITHOUT A BATHROOM MIRROR?

Nobody can imagine what it would be like if there was no mirror in the bathroom. We go to the sink and wash our hands: The view automatically goes up into the mirror above. Is the hairstyle sitting? Has the make-up gone? Did I catch all my hair while shaving? These and other beauty and styling questions answered the bathroom mirror. A simple mirror is sufficient for most things, a mirror with hinged sides, however, allows us a panoramic view of the head and upper body.
A mirror cabinet, on the other hand, becomes home to creams and powders, deodorant and shaving cream, make-up and patches. The lighting on the mirror throws the right (or sometimes even merciless) light on us, a heated mirror scores in that it does not fog when we take a shower or dream in the bathtub. Let's take a closer look at the world of mirrors.

DIFFERENT SHAPES OF THE BATHROOM MIRROR POSSIBLE

Decide for yourself whether the mirror harmoniously fits in or whether it should serve as an eye-catcher in the bathroom. In addition, you should buy individual  bathroom mirror in the best quality directly from the manufacturer , because only there you have the guarantee that the good piece is not blind in no time or your image is not clearly reproduced. Only very level mirrors do not cause any distortion of the mirror image.

FUNCTIONS AND TYPES OF BATHROOM MIRRORS: FROM LIGHTING, OUTLET AND STORAGE OPTIONS

A bathroom mirror is not just a mirror. Rather, he is a small all-rounder, which in the best case brings some more features than just the reproduction of a mirror image. The following variants are conceivable:

BATHROOM MIRROR WITH LIGHTING

The bathroom mirror must be well lit if you want to see it clearly. In the best case, it is mounted so that the daylight falls from outside onto the mirror (laterally or from behind). A dazzling effect by the sun is to be avoided! In addition, a bathroom mirror with lighting is a good investment. This will completely illuminate your face and eliminate any shadows. You can see if your skin is as pure as it seems at first glance, and you can work much better with make-up. Even men benefit from the bathroom mirror with lighting: When the beard is plucked into shape, sometimes few hairs are decisive for a perfect picture. These can only be found in good light.
If the mirror does not have integrated lighting, it is also possible to install an additional luminaire. Special mirror lamps are commercially available. LEDs ensure that the lighting does not cost too much power and that the entire mirror area is nevertheless well lit.

ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHT: COSMETIC MIRROR

Sometimes we can not look exactly enough and even need a magnifying glass: this is made possible by the beauty mirror, which is attached in addition to the usual bathroom mirror. The is screwed or glued and usually has a swivel arm. As a rule, the mirror itself can be turned or tilted so that it can be individually adjusted to the required position. The make-up mirror allows a more accurate and detailed picture of the face.
Most models are equipped with a triple magnification, some models increase even more. Then all the details can be seen, even those that we prefer to hide. But rest assured: the mirror shows details that your counterpart would never recognize!

HEATABLE BATHROOM MIRROR

In the mirror fine heating wires are integrated, which provide for a heating of the surface of the mirror. This prevents the water vapor arising during showering or bathing from settling on the mirror surface. You can look in the mirror right after showering or bathing, and you do not have to rub it dry first, nor do you need to air for a long eternity until the mirror gives you a clear view.

MIRROR WITH SOCKET

If a socket is integrated in the mirror (in the mirror cabinet), this has many advantages. On the one hand there can be connected the hair dryer, on the other hand the charging station for the electric toothbrush. It is very helpful if there is another outlet next to the mirror, because in most cases one will not be enough.

MIRROR WITH STORAGE OPTIONS

In the mirror cabinet there are many compartments or shelves on which you can put all your cosmetics and laundry. Partly are on a normal mirror that was not designed as a cabinet, more storage options in the form of a small bar or a shelf available. These surfaces are not only useful for storing useful little things, but also for decorative purposes.

NORMAL MIRROR OR MIRROR CABINET?

You would like to refurbish the apartment or renovate the bathroom? Then the question arises, whether a  mirror cabinet or a normal mirror  may move in with you.
The mirror cabinet has many advantages:
             additional storage space
swiveling doors for a panoramic view
usually equipped with lighting and socket
serves as an eye-catcher in the bathroom
             available in different shapes
Whether you choose a standard mirror or a mirror cabinet is up to you and your bathroom. If this is very small and angled, a large mirror cabinet can seem a bit clunky. A frameless model, on the other hand, looks classy and can also be used in smaller bathrooms. It is also important if and how the mirror fits into the rest of the bathroom. He should be as a cabinet in a similar design as the normal bathroom cabinet or come from the same design series. At least some details should be taken up here.
In a mere guest bathroom, a simple mirror with a flat surface is sufficient in most cases; a mirror cabinet is usually superfluous there. Experience has shown that families in particular opt for a mirror cabinet because the need for storage space is particularly high for them. There are even models for large washbasins with two sinks, in which the mirror cabinet with its three doors extends over the entire width of the washbasin and occupies a size of approx. 1.50 m.

WHO INVENTED THE MIRROR?

The history of mirror production dates back thousands of years. It is based on people's desire to see themselves, and so, after the initial discoveries of their own reflection in a smooth surface of water, stones were soon cut to replace mirrors. In today's Turkey, excavated slabs of obsidian have been found that allow this conclusion. But the mirrors were popular not only for reasons of vanity, they were also used for spiritual purposes. The ancient Egyptians added mirrors to their deceased women as a grave allowance.
The first real mirrors came about only in the late Roman age, about 300 years after Christ. At that time, a layer of glass was deposited with metal, which incidentally is also the current basis in the mirror production.
After the end of the Roman Empire, however, the production of colorless glasses was forgotten and for a long time no mirrors were produced. It was only in the 11th century that Italian mirror manufacturers came up with the idea of producing first capsule mirrors that had a convex shape. They used arched metal balls, which they first polished and then poured over with glass. In the thirteenth century followed the small concave mirrors, in which an alloy of tin and lead were placed in fresh glass flasks. Thereafter, the flasks were cut open.
Mirror production has been widespread in Germany since 1373, when the first glassmakers in Nuremberg founded this guild.
Gradually, the technology was refined and there were always new mirror manufacturers in Germany and Italy. The exact recipes were always kept secret and so the different manufacturers independently researched further. It was not until the 19th century that the first flat mirrors were developed at the court of Louis XIV. They consisted of liquid glass rolled into sheets on a bronze casting table. In this way, the Hall of Mirrors of Versailles was also equipped.

HOW ARE MIRRORS MADE TODAY?

The silver mirror was first developed in the 19th century and became known by Justus von Liebig, who published a recipe for mirror production in 1835. At that time, the "brilliant mirror" was made of a mixture of silver nitrate and aldehyde, whereby upon heating of this mixture, the silver deposited on the glass of the vessel. These mirrors were known as amalgam mirrors, but were banned because of their poor health tolerance in 1886.
Today, however, the mirror manufacturers use a vacuum and press in aluminum foil on a smooth glass or the glass can also be coated with aluminum or sputtered. Meanwhile, a distinction is made in the simple glass mirror as well as in crystal mirror. The latter must consist of at least ten percent oxides.

HOW DOES A MIRROR WORK?

Making the mirror is nice and good, but if you want to know how a mirror works , read on here.
The mirror consists of two layers, with the thin layer of aluminum being the most important of the two. It ensures that the light rays that hit it are reflected. The second layer is the thin layer of glass that is supposed to protect the aluminum.
The mirror can only reflect if the aluminum layer has been pressed very firmly and smoothly. The light rays strike here symmetrically and bounce off. On other surfaces, however, there are always small bumps, so they can not reflect. Even a seemingly smooth plate can not reflect, because the existing bumps must really be very small: they must be less than 0.0001 mm!

FUNNY DIGRESSION: RECOGNIZE SPY LEVELS

We know such mirrors from supermarkets and know that behind the alleged mirroring is an office, from which the area at the cash register is visible. If you want to test whether it is a normal or a spy mirror, you can do the following trick: Press your fingernail against the glass. A normal mirror would make a gap between your nail and your mirror image visible. This is not the case with a spy mirror, here one nail touches the other. However, there could be strange looks from the employees who are behind the mirror glass when trying in the supermarket mentioned.
